The SIPer (Subsurface Irrigation Planter) is every urban gardener's dream! Regardless of where you live OR what you grow, the SIPer is a great tool! The SIPer was designed by Jim Schwai, a resident of SE Wisconsin, and is made of a repurposed food-grade 5-gallon bucket. A bottom water reservoir is created and through the use of wicking strips water is transferred to the soil as needed!
Jim, creator of the SIPer, looked at his creation as a means to provide a sustainable, reliable and effective way of growing food in many different places. He has already traveled to a school in Belize to show them how to use his simple design. The effect- pepper plants the size of trees! He wants to continue to use his creation for philanthropic purposes- hence his partnership with HALO. He has allowed HALO to utilize his design as a teaching tool for our participants and to assemble and sell the SIPer as a way of generating revenue to support the shelter. He is also planning more trips to locations around the world to bring them his efficient and sustainable growing tool!
